Roles of CO2 in industrial production and life

Carbon dioxide is a widely known chemical compound that exists all around us and is known by its chemical formula as CO2.

When it comes to CO2, surely most of us immediately think of this as a toxic gas found in nature, produced during the respiration of humans and animals. Perhaps because we are familiar with the concept of CO2 causing environmental pollution, not many people are aware of the benefits and applications of this gas in industrial production and life, such as:

  • CO2 gas used in food industry: creating gas for drinks, making baked goods, removing caffeine in coffee, etc.

  • CO2 gas used in industrial: used in life jackets or air tubes in air guns, bicycle pumps, fire fighting, welding technology, etc.

Remak® XPS foam production line using CO2 gas for food

XPS foam is a material that has become familiar and popular in the construction industry today. This type of foam is often used for construction of heat insulation – heat protection, sound insulation – noise reduction, moisture resistance, leakproof for buildings, construction works, etc.

However, according to scientists, most XPS products on the market are being manufactured using old technology, using HCFC-22 (traditional gas) as an expansion aid in the production line. In the long run, this substance causes negative effects on the ecosystem, depleting the ozone layer. Meanwhile, Remak® XPS foam board produced by Remak Construction & Interior Joint Stock Company applies breakthrough advanced technology: using food-grade CO2 instead of HCFC-22. This is a gas with the purity of more than 99.8%, ensuring no having dust and impurities harmful to human health.

Remak® XPS for high energy efficiency

Remak® XPS manufacturing technology uses food-grade CO2 for great energy efficiency. According to scientists’ estimates, the conversion of using CO2 gas in the production of Remak® XPS foam helps reduce up to 460 million tons of CO2 emissions per year into the environment, and at the same time contributes to completely eliminating 100 tons of HCFC-22 in the XPS foam production in Vietnam.

Remak® XPS panels also reduce large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions and provide the most effective solution to thermal insulation problems in buildings. The application of XPS insulation foam for roofs and walls can cut energy use in half. In Europe, for example, using XPS insulation foam in buildings save roughly of 3.3 million barrels of oil per day.

Recent studies of newly constructed buildings prove that: commercial buildings using XPS insulation panels with a thickness of 15-18cm can save annual electricity consumption from 343-344KWh /m2 (www.styropor.de). It is equivalent to every year, every 1m2 of XPS insulation used will save about 1,000,000 VND (electricity price 2500 VND/KW). When compared to heating oil consumption, 1kg XPS saves about 400 liters of heating oil over 50 years.
